How to Add Music to your Instagram Reel & Tips on How to Engage More People

Are you finding your posts are just not reaching the amount of people you hoped? Here's some tips on how to upload your reel with original and Instagram music, and how to get it in front of the right audience.

We can't promise fast and stark results, but once you find your ideal market, and can effectively communicate and wow them, then you can ride the wave of their excitement.

How to Get your Post Moving:

Make sure you tag and mention who participated in this video. The more people who can share this to their own stories and pages, the better! The goal for your content is to be shareable, so help yourselves out by mentioning the people who will talk about the experience they had with your company.

To ensure that you have all the functionality and perks of Instagram’s Reel interface, make sure you upload these videos on the app on your phone.

Our videos come with curated music but if you want to change the audio or music, follow these instructions! You can use these instructions for making new reels as well. Have fun!

Adding Music:

If your reel is an interview, it is imperative that you do this step as Instagram's editor will not recognize that there is audio on this file. Step 11 helps people understand that this is original to your company and provides presence and reach to more markets.

Using Original Audio

  1. Upload your video to Instagram under Reels

  2. Once populated, click next.

  3. Click the music note on the top right corner,

  4. Go to import, it is the 5th option on the top navigation bar. Upload the video as an audio file.

  5. On the music note menu, go to Controls and make sure that “Camera Audio” is set at 0 and the “Original Audio” is set at 100%.

  6. Watch your video to make sure that everything matches and is in sync. If it's not synced, click the Edit button on the bottom left. The video will display in a typical video editor format with the audio file underneath the video file. You can stretch, compress, delete, or move the audio file.

  7. Click Next

  8. Once you have reached the “Write a Caption” page, click the Edit Cover button on the video. The cover photo will be what people see when it sits on your feed. Tip: You can scroll through the video if you have a particular shot in mind, or use an image from your camera roll.

  9. Write your caption. Try to incorporate hashtags into your copy.

  10. Once you have added your copy, make sure to tag the applicable people as well as mentioning them in the caption through @’s. You are given up to 20 people to tag in a post.

  11. Last step, go to the rename audio section and make sure that your company name is present as well as "original audio". If there is room, consider adding the name of the song of the Royalty free song title and artist. You have 50 characters. Why do that? Sometimes the name of the song tells people what mood or vibe you are trying to convey.

Using Instagram music

If you are using popular licensed music you cannot rename the audio, but if it is a trending Royalty free song you may add a spin on it like "Song name x Your company name." You can see examples of this when there is a music and an interview overlayed in the video.

  1. Upload your video to Instagram under Reels

  2. After uploading, stay on the first page and add the music using the button on the left hand side of the screen. You’re looking for a music note.
Tip: Make sure you saved the audio file prior to Step 1 so you can find it in the saved section of the Music note page.

  3. Sync the section of the song that you would like to use for the video. You can scroll left or right to find your section. Click done.
Tip: If using the music we picked, you can approximate the spot by listening to the video we supplied or in the file name, you will find the timestamp of when that song starts.

  4. Watch the video to make sure that it works with the flow and beat of the video. If not, repeat step 3

Things to Consider:

If you do not want people to use this as a template, on “write a caption” page, click on Advanced settings and enable “Don’t let others use this reel as a template”. Templates allow anyone on Instagram to use the same audio and timing as your reel and replace the photos and videos with their own. This helps your video grow in popularity, i.e. you want to create a trend.

If your business page is connected to your Facebook page, your reels will populate on your Facebook Feed. We highly recommend checking that post to see if it is uploaded and displayed correctly on your Facebook Feed.

How you can get more people to see your content:

  1. Add a location. This is a geotag and will populate onto the applicable geographical page allocated to this place. It is not a promise that you will go viral but it will give your content another chance at being seen.

  2. Add Collaborators to the post. This can only be done BEFORE you post. After you have posted your content, this option is no longer available. Adding a collaborator allows this specific post to live on your collaborators main feed. Unlike tagging someone on a post where this lives on their mentions page (the third option after reels on someone's feed) you now have access to this person's network. When they get a like, you get a like.

  3. Find music on Instagram that is not just about to trend. If you are looking for your video to go viral then you ideally would like to use a song that is seeing traction on Instagram around the 150K mark and growing you will see an arrow beside the title of the song if it is trending. You need to move fast! (First mover advantage!) If you use a song that is already viral (600K+) your content will now be competing against the thousands of creators, businesses, and Instagrammers who want to follow the trend. You are looking for emerging trends.

  4. Tag and hashtag applicable companies or agencies that would also benefit from this content. Ex: @360immersion, #explorecanada

Overall, success for your posts is based on how many people will see it! The more people who see and engage with your content (likes, shares, comments, saves) the better for your business page. Know who your audience is and how they behave, know the key players and strategic partners of your industry, and share this content with the people who helped piece it together.
